The difference in basophilic staining reflects the relative content of glycosaminoglycan aggrecan. The glycosaminoglycans are highly negatively charged and highly hydrophilic and occupy a hugh volume relative to their mass.
This creates a swelling pressure, or turgor, that enables the matrix to withstand compressive forces. Cartilage matrix resists compression by this mechanism. A loss of aggrecan would lead to a reduction of turgor in the cartilage and weaken it. Hyaline cartilage contains fibers made primarily of type II collagen only. Fibrocartilage contains type II collagen but also contains abundant type I collagen. Elastic cartilage contains type II collagen and elastic fibers.
Identify the true statement s about the type of cartilage shown in this micrograph. Correct answer 1. Hyaline cartilage is highly resistant to compression. It does NOT always have a perichondrium as in articular cartilage. Its matrix consists of type II collagen and hyaluronan, and it is NOT found in the pinna of the ear and epiglottis elastic cartilage is found there. Correct answer 5. All of the statements are TRUE.
Note that statement 3 is TRUE. The matrix of fibrocartilage does contain type II collagen and some hyaluronan of course, there's also a lot of type I collagen just because type 1 collagen wasn't mentioned does NOT make the statement incorrect. Correct answer 2. A chondroblast in hyaline cartilage. Osteogenic progenitors are located in the connective tissue perichondrium. Jump to: Suggested Reading. Learning Objectives. Hyaline cartilage. Review Questions. Elastic cartilage provides strength, and elasticity, and maintains the shape of certain structure such as the external ear. It has a perichondrium. Cartilage: The three types of cartilage There are three types of cartilage: Hyaline - most common, found in the ribs, nose, larynx, trachea. Is a precursor of bone.
Fibro - is found in invertebral discs, joint capsules, ligaments. Elastic - is found in the external ear, epiglottis and larynx. Hyaline cartilage This is a diagram of hyaline cartilage, showing active chondrocytes sitting in their lacunae.
Elastic cartilage. Hyaline cartilage is easily distinguished from elastic and fibrocartilage because of the homogeneous no fibers are visible extracellular matrix ECM. The darker staining matrix immediately surrounding the capsule is called territorial matrix , while the matrix that occupies the majority of space between chondrocytes is interterritorial matrix. Slide 71 Hyaline cartilage, Gallocyanin and Azure A stain.
Again, note the perichondrium , chondrocytes in lacunae, capsule , isogenous groups , and territorial and interterritorial matrix. Supplemental Slide Developing bone.
This slide shows an example of articular cartilage , which has no perichondrium. It is a specialized type of hyaline cartilage found at the ends of articulating bones.
